Hong Island Krabi
Things to Do

Snorkeling

The reefs around the Koh Hong island group are among the healthiest in Krabi. Water clarity regularly exceeds 15 metres during the dry season, and you'll encounter an impressive variety of marine life without needing to go deep.

Snorkeling at Koh Hong Krabi

Snorkeler exploring a coral reef with tropical fish at the Hong Islands

The best snorkeling is found on the eastern reef of Koh Lading and the outer western wall of Koh Hong itself. Koh Rai, for those who make it that far, has largely undisturbed reef that sees very few divers or snorkelers.

What You'll See

Expect to encounter parrotfish, clownfish in their anemones, puffer fish, sea fans, soft coral and, with some patience, reef sharks on the deeper edges. Hawksbill turtles have been spotted regularly around Koh Rai.

All our tours include masks, fins and life jackets. No experience necessary, your guide will brief you before you enter the water.

Questions People Ask

Do I need to bring my own mask and fins?
No. All our tours include masks, fins and a life jacket as standard. Equipment is cleaned between tours. If you have prescription goggles or prefer your own mask for hygiene reasons, bring it, but you don't need to buy anything for this trip.
Can non-swimmers join the tour?
Yes, and several do on every trip. Life jackets are available for anyone who wants one, the water is calm in the protected bays, and guests can stay on the boat surface or in the shallows. Nobody is pressured to snorkel if they don't want to.
How deep is the snorkeling?
The main spots sit in 2 to 6 metres of water. You'll see most of the reef from the surface without diving at all. The deeper edge of Koh Lading's eastern reef drops to around 10 to 12 metres where reef sharks are more common, but most guests stay at the surface the whole time and still see plenty.
Is the coral in good condition?
Better than most of the Andaman coast. The national park status limits boats and bans anchoring on the reef. Koh Lading's eastern wall has large sea fans and dense soft coral. Koh Rai's outer reef, which sees very few visitors, is the healthiest in the group.
Will I definitely see turtles?
We can't guarantee wildlife, but Hawksbill turtles are spotted regularly around Koh Rai and occasionally around Koh Lading. The speedboat tour, which visits all four islands, gives you the best chance. Your guide will mention recent sightings near specific spots.
