Koh Hong vs Phi Phi: Which Day Trip Actually Delivers?

Phi Phi has the fame and Maya Bay. Koh Hong has the quieter beaches, the lagoon, and arguably the better snorkeling. Here's the honest side-by-side so you can pick the one that matches what you actually want.

Koh Hong vs Phi Phi: Which Day Trip Actually Delivers?

Phi Phi and Koh Hong are the two most famous day trips out of Krabi and most visitors ask which one is better. The answer depends on what you want from the day. Phi Phi is the famous one with Maya Bay. Koh Hong is the quieter one with the hidden lagoon and better snorkeling. Here's the breakdown.

The short version

If you want the Maya Bay shot and don't mind sharing it with hundreds of other boats, go Phi Phi. If you want a more varied day with better snorkeling, quieter beaches, and the hidden lagoon, go Koh Hong. Most people who have done both prefer Koh Hong.

What Koh Hong offers

Koh Hong is the main island in a small cluster about 8 km off Ao Nang. The tour route typically covers the hidden lagoon at Koh Hong, the main beach and the 360-degree viewpoint, then adds one or more of Lao Lading, Pakbia, Lao Ka or Koh Rai as additional stops.

The hidden lagoon is what most people come for. It's a saltwater pool fully enclosed by limestone cliffs, reachable through a narrow gap in the rock. You swim or kayak through the gap and suddenly you're inside a calm, still room of water ringed by 80-metre cliffs. There's nothing quite like it in the other Krabi groups.

Snorkeling around the islands is solid, with hard coral, plenty of reef fish, and occasional turtle sightings. The water stays clear most of the year and tours include masks, fins and life jackets as standard.

What Phi Phi offers

The Phi Phi Islands are a group of six limestone islands roughly equidistant from Krabi and Phuket. Phi Phi Don is the main inhabited island with accommodation and a small town. Phi Phi Leh is the uninhabited one with Maya Bay, Loh Samah Bay, Pileh Lagoon and the Viking Cave.

Maya Bay is the headline attraction. Yes it's the beach from the 2000 film The Beach. White sand, turquoise water, limestone cliffs wrapping around three sides. The Thai authorities closed it for three years (2018-2021) because the reef was being destroyed by the hundreds of boats arriving every day. It's now open again with stricter rules: boats can't moor inside the bay, and you enter via a back path from Loh Samah on the other side of the island.

Beyond Maya Bay, a typical Phi Phi tour covers Pileh Lagoon (a much smaller and more crowded version of Koh Hong's lagoon), the Viking Cave, a snorkeling stop at Monkey Beach (where the monkeys have become aggressive from too many tourists feeding them), and some time on Phi Phi Don. Lunch is usually on Phi Phi Don at one of the restaurants.

The big difference: crowds

The single biggest difference between Koh Hong and Phi Phi is how many people you'll see. Phi Phi attracts day trip boats from Krabi, Phuket, Koh Lanta and Ao Nang, all converging on the same few spots around 11am. On a busy day Maya Bay can feel like a queue. Pileh Lagoon, which is often called "the Phi Phi version of Hong Lagoon," is small and narrow and fills up with 50+ people in the space of 10 minutes.

Koh Hong gets a fraction of the traffic. The national park limits which operators can run tours there, and the overall numbers are much lower. When you arrive at the hidden lagoon on a normal day you might share it with one or two other boats, not twenty. The difference in feel is huge.

Maya Bay vs Hong Lagoon specifically

These are the two headline attractions of each group, and they often get compared directly.

Maya Bay is a crescent-shaped beach enclosed by cliffs on three sides. The cliffs are tall, the sand is fine white, and the water turns an unreal shade of turquoise in the right light. In person it does look like the film. The issue is that everyone knows that, so you're sharing it with hundreds of other people. On a quiet day you'll queue to get on the beach. On a busy day you'll barely see the sand under the people.

Hong Lagoon is completely different, and that's the point. It's not a beach, it's a saltwater pool inside the island, fully enclosed by cliffs on every side. You swim or kayak in through a narrow gap and find yourself in a quiet, calm room of water that feels private even when other boats are around. It's a weirder, more unique experience than Maya Bay, and it's not hyped the same way so it hasn't been ruined by its own fame.

Which is better? If you've seen the Leonardo DiCaprio film and want to stand on that specific beach, Maya Bay. If you want something you won't see anywhere else, Hong Lagoon.

Snorkeling comparison

Koh Hong wins on snorkeling by a clear margin. The reef around the Hong Islands group is in much better condition than the reef around Phi Phi Leh, largely because there are fewer boats and the park enforces stricter rules. Visibility is typically 10-15 metres in the dry season around Koh Hong. You'll see healthy hard coral, plenty of reef fish, and occasional turtles near Pakbia or Lao Lading.

Phi Phi's snorkeling has suffered from heavy boat traffic over the years. Some of the spots (Loh Samah, Monkey Beach) are still reasonable, but the bar is lower than what Koh Hong delivers. If snorkeling is the main reason you're doing a day trip, Koh Hong is the better call.

Getting there

Koh Hong is 20 minutes from Ao Nang by speedboat and 40 minutes by longtail. Phi Phi is 45-60 minutes by speedboat from Ao Nang and closer to 90 minutes by slower boat options. This adds up over the day: on a Phi Phi tour you spend 2-3 hours in transit, on a Koh Hong tour you spend about an hour.

More transit time means less time at the actual islands, which is why Phi Phi tours often feel rushed. You arrive at each stop, get maybe 30-45 minutes, and then you're back on the boat.

Can you stay overnight?

Phi Phi yes, Koh Hong no. This is a significant difference if you want to see the islands without the day-trip crush. Staying overnight on Phi Phi Don means you can visit Maya Bay and the other Phi Phi Leh spots early in the morning or late in the afternoon, before or after the day boats arrive. It transforms the experience completely.

If you have the time and want to see Phi Phi properly, an overnight on Phi Phi Don is the right call. If you only have a single day, a Koh Hong tour will give you a better day out than a Phi Phi day trip.

Which to pick for each type of trip

One day, first-time visitor, want the best experience

Koh Hong. Less travel time, better snorkeling, a more unique headline attraction (the lagoon), and fewer crowds. You'll enjoy your day more.

One day, specifically want to see Maya Bay

Phi Phi. Nothing else will do for people who've seen the film. Book an early boat (departing 7-8am) to get there before the crowds.

Two days, want to do both

Do them separately. Day 1: Koh Hong (quieter, varied day). Day 2: Phi Phi overnight (drop your bag at a Phi Phi Don guesthouse, do Phi Phi Leh the next morning from there, return to Krabi in the afternoon).

Travelling with kids

Koh Hong. Less time on the boat, calm shallow water on Hong Island's main beach, and the tour structure keeps kids engaged. Phi Phi's longer transit times test the patience of younger children.

Snorkelers and divers

Koh Hong. Better reef, clearer water, less crowded snorkel spots.

Photographers

Depends on the shot you want. Maya Bay is the famous one. Hong Lagoon is the unusual one. Both look great in photos, just very different.

The honest bottom line

Phi Phi has the bigger brand. Koh Hong has the better day. If you have already done Phi Phi, Koh Hong will be a welcome surprise. If you are doing one day trip in Krabi and want the best experience, Koh Hong is our pick without hesitation, and it's not close.

FAQ

Is it worth going to Phi Phi just for Maya Bay?
Only if seeing the exact beach from the film matters to you. The bay itself is beautiful but the crowds and the regulations (you can't swim at the beach side anymore, for example) have taken some of the magic out of it. If you just want a beach with big cliffs behind it and don't care about the film connection, Koh Hong and Railay will give you that without the hassle.
Can I see both Phi Phi and Koh Hong on the same day?
Some operators sell combined tours but we don't recommend them. They're on opposite sides of Krabi and combining them means a lot of boat time and very little land time at either. Split them over two days for a much better experience.
Which is more family friendly?
Koh Hong. Shorter boat transfers, calmer water, more variety across the day to keep kids engaged. Phi Phi tours are longer and the midday crowds at Maya Bay can be overwhelming for young children.
What about Phi Phi's nightlife if I stay overnight?
Phi Phi Don's main town (Tonsai village) has a reasonable bar scene along the beach, particularly around the main pier. It's more laid back than Phuket's Patong but livelier than Ao Nang. If you want an island party night, Phi Phi is the spot. If you want quiet, stay on the other side of Phi Phi Don or skip it entirely.

Ready to try Koh Hong?

If this has convinced you to give Koh Hong a go, we have daily tours from Ao Nang. The longtail is the cheapest and most atmospheric, the speedboat covers more ground, and the private options are available if you want the boat to yourself.
